DO WE NEED SHADOWS TO REMEMBER? There are no shadows in the PTSD simulation for soldiers returning from Iraq or Afghanistan, but there are shadows in the virtual warfare training they go through before combat. Why? Because the budget for war preparation is greater than that for recovery.

MOMA’s new design exhibition opens tomorrow, this year the theme is the relationship between design and communication both with people and objects….the show is packed with over 200 works, many from young designers from the US and abroad. Here’s my preview picks:

Communication Prosthesis Portrait Series, Sacha Nordmeyer, 2009
Sacha Nordmeyer, b. 1977 Germany and based in Reims, France, has one of the more iconic designs from the show – the prosthetic smile – helping reluctant humans crack a smile and dentists reach your molars with ease.
Other pieces to look out for:
Tahir Hemphill’s data visualization of Hip Hop careers – Jay Z and 50 Cent analyzed by word count, syllables reveal a change in the cultural vernacular over time.
Revital Cohen’s beautiful nostalgic designs for medical equipment that contain up-to-date digital technology packed behind the veneers of nickel-plated brass, glass and resin.
